Dear Hugh, Claire, Robert and Judith,
In line with UCU’s HE Sector Conference resolutions and the decisions of UCU’s HE Committee, UCU has established trade disputes with both USS and ‘Four Fights’ (pay) employers including the University of Bristol.
As regards Four Fights, UCU members at the University of Bristol are now in dispute with the University because the final offer made by your representatives at the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) on 6 May 2021 will mean another year of real-terms pay cuts, widespread precarious and casual employment for higher education staff, a 15% gender pay gap and the need for a national agreement on workloads.
As regards USS, UCU members at the University of Bristol are in dispute with the University because of the detrimental changes to the USS pension that were pushed through the USS Joint Negotiating Committee on 31 August, and the failure of UUK to work with UCU and insist on a new 2021 valuation using moderately prudent assumptions.
A formal letter from UCU HQ is forthcoming.
It is still possible to avoid widespread sector and institutional disruption this autumn if your representatives at UUK and UCEA return to the negotiating table urgently and make acceptable offers. UCU negotiators are on standby and ready to get started.
Bristol UCU President
